Here’s a list of Best Books To Read, these are my picks as these books have helped me to get a better understanding of life and see life from a different perspective.

To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee

This story revolves around a girl named Scout Finch and her learnings and experiences with life during 1933 and 1935. The title “To Kill a Mockingbird” has very little literal connection to the story of this book, but it carries a great deal of symbolic weight in the book. There are many lessons that the girl learns from this book and you can too

  • To understand people better, You need to put yourself in their shoes and try to understand them and see the world from their eyes.
  • Don’t kill a mockingbird which means to not take advantage of someone who is weaker than you and also to protect the ones who are innocent rather than hurting them.
  • Keep fighting even if you know you are going to lose and keep moving forward with courage and hope and not to let fear stop you.
  • The world is unfair and you need to accept it and fight the world and keep doing the right thing.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Published in 1985, The Handmaid’s Tale is dystopian about the Republic of Gilead which is a totalitarian government in the future of the United States. The story is told by a handmaid named June and we don’t know exactly what happened but we know that the modern society we live in today is of the recent past and we are in the early days of the Republic of Gilead and June tells us how she ended up as a handmaid. As a reader, it makes you feel that we are not distant from something like this. Gilead is controlled by a Christian fundamentalist group who are trying to go back to an old way of living, something resembling the Old Testament. A new patriarchal structure is put in place and because fertility is an issue handmaids like June are now responsible for giving birth to all new children and the rights of women have stripped away. What might haunt you is the way that this new government takes hold, everyone thinks this is just temporary. June realizes that everybody thinks this is temporary and while they might be right but it might take out the whole of their lives. It’s a book that has often been challenged in American classrooms and libraries.

Written by the English author Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre is a classic novel about a young girl named Jane who has a very difficult childhood with no parents and she is sent off to live with her uncle where she is treated badly by her aunt and her cousins, However, Jane has a very strong character and forthright personality and she knows how to stand her own ground even from childhood and it is because of her attitude that she’s finally sent off to an orphanage and Jane is actually looking forward to going there as she sees it as a relief however the life at the orphanage doesn’t turn out to be that good and she even loses her friend. Jane also falls in love with a man named Mr. Rochester. Both of them are not described as attractive characters in any way and Thornfield the place where they meet is described as a Gothic mansion.

Jane is a very pleasant character, she’s smart and likes to observe people and figure out their personalities. In the novel, Jane is a strong feminist who believes that no matter what happens one should always stick to one’s own principles and always hope for the best.

Beloved by Toni Morrison

A storyline with traumatic neo-slave narrative, Beloved is a psychological exploration written by Toni Morrison and published in 1987. The novel mostly emphasizes on Mother-daughter relationship, psychological effects of slavery, and family relationships. Sethe and her Youngest daughter Denver lived in Cincinnati, Ohio after they escaped from slavery, and their home is haunted by some spirit who Sethe believes is her eldest daughter who was killed by Sethe. One fine day when Sethe returns home from work she sees a young woman in front of her house who calls herself beloved.

While doing a scientific experiment, a young scientist named Victor Frankenstein creates a monster-like creature and the story is about the existence and survival of this creature. This book is an old classic written by a 19 years old girl in 1818 and the first edition was published anonymously. The book allows us to understand the perspective of the monster as well as that of his creator. The monster in a chapter narrates his story and expresses his loneliness. This novel will challenge you to decide what was moral, What it means to be human, and what it costs to humanity when technology interferes with the values that we hold so dear to us.
